I grew up on Pitts Road in Richmond, Texas — which tells you something about where this business got its name. BBQ in Houston isn’t a hobby, it’s a baseline. I’ve been cooking outdoors my whole life, on everything I could get my hands on. These days that means brisket, whole pigs, backstrap, quail, spatchcock turkey, sausage, smash burgers on the flat top. If you can cook it over fire or smoke, I’ve probably tried it.
The name It’s the Pits is part personal history, part tribute. It honors the It’s the Pits Cookers — a highly awarded Texas BBQ competition team I worked alongside at the Fort Bend County Fair. I hauled tables, stirred beans, stayed out of the way, and learned a lot from some seriously good cooks and good men. We sponsor their non-profit every year. Check them out.
I met Brooke in the Texas Hill Country — won her over with a steak on a cheap apartment patio grill. Three kids later, I’ve cooked for this family just about every weekend since. I’ve also spent years cooking professionally and plenty of evenings just feeding neighbors on the lake because that’s what you do. This business isn’t a side project. It’s how the Montgomery family pays the bills, and I treat every job like it.
We’ve been in Cumming since 2015. Brooke’s family has been on Lake Lanier a lot longer than that. When you call, you’re calling a neighbor — I’ll tell you what’s wrong, tell you what it’ll cost, and fix it. If it’s not worth fixing, I’ll tell you that too.
